ABSTRACT

The early years of institutionalized coffee-houses correspond to the new outlook on specialized territories that will later be called institutions. The novelty brought about by the existence of coffee shops in general, among which Il Caff Florian was one of the most successful, renders them literally as containers of news, the only media centers accessible to larger crowds. Il Caff Florian opened on December 29, 1720 and borrowed its name which would become the trademark of the absolute artistic caff from its first owner, Floriano Francesconi. Several of Goldoni's comedies have coffee as an element of decorum, but the topographic figure of Venice and the Caff Florian is undoubtedly the comedy La Bottega del Caff. The Florian adds now a new dimension to its old ones: it has become the place where revolutions are talked over until late, and with the Austrian occupation the locale is the center of attention of the foreign authorities.
