ABSTRACT

When Germany signed the unconditional surrender in May 1945, the occupiers were shocked by the signs of undernutrition they observed in the people. Food policy at that time meant rationing and rations remained low until 1949. Undernutrition was the main problem until rationing ended in 1951 in the Western zone and in 1958 in the East (Table 15.1). 1 Comparison of the Energy Value of the Lowest Official Rations in the Eastern and Western Occupation Zones of Germany 1945–1949 https://www.niso.org/standards/z39-96/ns/oasis-exchange/table">
