ABSTRACT
To understand the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria [IS], one must first understand the relationship between IS and al-Qaeda. This chapter will outline the basic structures of these organizations, discuss the history behind the existence of both groups, discuss their ideological similarities and differences, funding, recruiting methods, and why the two groups split apart.
