ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the foreign policies of the other global players in the Sahel and the Horn of Africa, in the Arabian Gulf and in Central Asia, with a view to provide context and highlights the implications for EU policies. It also focuses on the US, China and Russia, in recognition of their geopolitical, military, political and economic weight and the intensity of their interaction with the EU and its broader neighbourhood. The chapter explores the Sahel and the Horn of Africa, the Arabian Gulf, and Central Asia, before drawing some overall conclusions about the roles of the global players in the EU's broader neighbourhood and the challenges their policies present for the EU. Hence it also considers the extent to which the foreign policy games' of the other players support or hamper the EU's interest in promoting greater intraregional integration in its broader neighbourhood.
