ABSTRACT
During the several days before 21 September 1304, a most unusual confrontation took place in the unimportant rural preceptory of the Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem at St Naixent (Figure 14.1, location A), five miles south-east of the town of Bergerac (B) in the valley of the River Dordogne.1
