ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the numerous molecules and chemical processes involved, which may be unfamiliar to readers. It discusses through a comparison of biochemical markers in fatigued and non-fatigued individuals shows differences in concentrations of a multitude of different molecules. The chapter also discusses the decrease in the efficiency of our performance on tasks in studies of fatigue and also the decrease in motivation that accompanies loss of performance. It helps readers to understand dysfunctions in the brain that may follow from metabolic and immune system mechanisms for fatigue. The chapter utilizes both 8-Oxo-deoxy-guanosine and 8-isoprostane for the development of an anti-fatigue food or drink component. It provides efforts under the twenty-first century Center of Excellence (COE) program "Establishment of the COE to overcome fatigue" under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology Japanese Government program to develop the foods and drugs to overcome fatigue.
