ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes a different model, in which the brain regulates exercise performance "in anticipation" specifically to insure protection of the "milieu interieur." One of the key components of fatigueodel is its proposal that the brain uses fatigue as a disagreeable emotion to insure that exercise always terminates before there is a catastrophic failure of biological function. The concept of fatigue is purely an emotion, rather than a physical event, has important implications for our understanding of the psychology of sporting performance. The chapter explains how readers believe the Central Governor Model (CGM) works and how the new model posits an entirely novel explanation for the reason why fatigue must develop during exercise. Thus the CGM proposes that the brain regulates the mass of skeletal muscle that is recruited during exercise specifically to insure that bodily homeostasis is never threatened.
