ABSTRACT

Automation consisted in transferring a single cognitive function from a human to a machine. Automation frequently created drastic changes in people's work practices. Interaction design is a complex domain where expertize and experience needs to be gained over time from trial-and-error, and of course successes. The more human–machine interaction knowledge increases together with technological possibilities, the more this optimum moves up to the right. The mix of human and machine agents leads to a biological-like global system that is very difficult to study because it is difficult to isolate small-enough parts that can be studied in isolation. There are a variety of systems that support air traffic management such as the controller-pilot data link communications, with various interfaces in the cockpit such as the datalink control and display unit, the control and display unit and the radio management panel. All these terms show that there is more software, and the nature of interaction between the various agents’ changes.
