ABSTRACT

This chapter states a crucial factor in formulating a European Union (EU) social welfare agenda as well as a politico-economic one, as those wielding power focused on ensuring a protective framework for workers to assist social cohesion. The evolution of the body politic of the EU is a modern example of nation states coming together to collaborate and attempt to build a politico-economic framework as well as to provide a broad social framework to protect workers rights. The Equal Treatment Directive (ETD), which seeks to prevent bullying and harassment on the grounds of the named protected characteristics, and the utilization of the criminal code as a means of sanction, evidently this is an issue that is important for the EU. Anti-discrimination legislation in line with the ETD, the Constitution of the Italian Republic provides that all citizens have equal social dignity and are equal before the law without distinction of sex, race, language, religion, political opinions, personal and social conditions.
