ABSTRACT

When asked to talk about what it means to participate in one of Melbourne’s multicultural festivals, a member of a Middle Eastern and West African music and dance group responded:

I particularly enjoy playing at a street party in my suburb because it changes the nature of the place where I conduct my daily life. Where I walk to pay bills or do the shopping becomes a place infused with memories of people dancing, playing music, sitting in the sunshine chatting, meeting friends. It adds to the quality of life by adding a new and pleasant dimension to what Sydney Road means to me. (interview 1998)
