ABSTRACT
Museums tame unruly objects. They gather them, make order of them, set them in frames of meaning and render them legible. And this takes work. To understand the intellectual, political and cultural significance of the collections they house, then, we need to know about museums’ practice. We need to look beyond the displays and texts to the instruments and techniques, and the materiality of objects – museum products reveal much about museum processes.
