ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book examines that the European policy documents reveals some distinctive features of the EC approach towards regional integration in the rest of the world. The European Union (EU) strategy vis--vis the Mediterranean, as well as the South Caucasus, is very much linked to security needs, although economic concerns are obviously also presented throughout the book. Anglophone Commonwealths points to the importance of emerging economies and the problematic unilateral imposition of Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) on the regions of the South identified by Europe. The Central African case illustrates some additional points. One is mat inter-regionalism in a context of unstructured regionalism can become an additional source of international rent-seeking by infra-state actors. A final point is brought by the East African Community (EAC) and Communaute Economique des Etats d'Afrique Centrale (CEMAC) case studies.
