ABSTRACT

The difficulties that the Hospitallers in England had in acquiring the Templars’ possessions are as well known as the story of the Templars’ dissolution on 22 march 1312 itself. 2 What more is there to say? Firstly, there is room for clarification of when the Hospitallers gained control of the Templars’ property in England, which will be discussed in the first part of this paper. Secondly, it is profitable to highlight a few examples of attempted acquisitions, in order to understand better the process of acquisition. Finally, in conclusion, consideration will be given to what determined the success or failure of an acquisition bid.
