ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to explore the why and the how of trying to get 'good' and positive stories into the news programmes. News is a means for ordinary citizens to be connected to events that would otherwise prove to be remote from their personal experience. In the United States one of the noted trends that are occurring is the establishment of start-up news organisations around the country by conservative groups. A Project for Excellence in Journalism study by the Pew Research Centre showed a gulf in the news agenda between traditional and social media. Media outlets are beginning to position themselves in order to adapt to the new age of news gathering and production. The chapter looks at a number of events within the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) that shall demonstrate the dilemma faced by authorities and governments engaged in combating insurgencies and terrorism campaigns.
