ABSTRACT

Global governance is an omnipresent topic in both public discourses and academia, linked to the awareness that an increasing number of global problems – ranging from global warming to international terrorism and financial stability – cannot be managed by states alone, but require cooperation between different state and nonstate actors. This chapter analyses the roles of these actors in global governance and questions how and to what extent they shape world politics. Three general categories of non-state actors and their participation in global governance processes will be discussed here: intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and expertise organizations.
