An inventory compiled in 1601 to detail the goods of Elizabeth, Countess of Shrewsbury, better known as Bess of Hardwick, includes an account of the contents of Bess’s bedchamber. A description of the bed and its hangings is followed by details of the smaller furnishings, including

a little nedlework quition with my Ladies Armes in it lined with red velvet, my Ladies books viz: Calvin uppon Jobe, Covered with russet velvet, the resolution, Salomans proverbs, a booke of meditations, too other books Covered with black velvet, a looking glass, an hower glass, too brushes.
