ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a general understanding of the background to the development of eldercare, the recent developments, and the major challenges facing the developments. It also offers discussions related to emerging social inequalities and policy implications for long-term care at facility and individual levels. The chapter focuses on the recent development of non-government eldercare institutions. It presents findings from a national survey of non-government eldercare facilities in China. The chapter utilizes data collected in a national survey conducted in 2008, completed on 1 September 2008, sponsored by the Chinese National Committee of Ageing. Land or real estate is one of the most valued properties in China. The fact that some could have the privilege of using the land with low or no interest rate for mortgage suggests that the market of the eldercare industry was not built on an equal footing.
