ABSTRACT
Bilingual translation of legislation has always been, and will continue to be, a challenge for any legal translator regardless of the proximity of the source legal system to the target legal system and the typological distance between the source and target languages. This chapter introduces a project for translating the new Czech Civil Code into English, focuses on its preparatory stage, namely determining the scope and depth of a jurilinguistic comparative analysis that precedes the translation, selecting a relevant research methodology and providing practical examples of its application. Translation of the new Czech Civil Code into English requires extensive comparative research focusing on conceptual analysis of terminology used in 1964 Czech Civil Code and in the new code. Translated legislation is to serve primarily as a source of information on legal issues for interested persons who have no or limited command of the language of the original. The practice of translating legislation into foreign languages dates back to ancient Rome.
