Before the coming of factory industry, cotton and wool processing had a distinctly regional nature and it was during the expansion and specialization of the international market that the manufacturing landscape formed. 1 Locations in the north-west of Germany profited notably from their proximity to Atlantic trading centres and their development came under the influence of the progressive industry in the Netherlands, north-western France and England. 2
