ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates Croats negative attitudes toward different minority groups by utilizing data from the 2003/2004 South-East European Social Survey Project (SEESSP) survey. It focuses particularly on the position of Serbs, but the hostility toward other minority groups is also of interest. The Serbs are the largest minority group and the one the Croats were in war with, the central issue at stake concerns the relations between Croats and Serbs. Nevertheless, Croatia has a multitude of other ethnic minority groups and prejudice and discrimination against these is also of interest. In spite of significant political and economic advances, the influence of war is still felt in interethnic relations in Croatia. Research concerning negative attitudes toward specific minority groups has been less systematic, although Ivan Siber has conducted several studies of social distance toward different minority groups.
