ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to assess the performance of the key members of the Greek food value chain regarding specific sustainability outcomes. It explores the concept of sustainability in value chains and the food sector in particular. The chapter examines the methodological approach employed is presented whilst. It discusses the managerial implications and research limitations. In today's dynamic business environment, competition no longer takes place between individual firms, but between entire value chains. The food value chain is a chain with many unique characteristics relating to food safety, food quality and complexity. Firms dealing with vegetables had clearly the worst scores in sustainability indicators and members should modify their strategy according to the successful sustainable practices of fruit and dairy firms. Different industries have potentially different and unique value chains and comparing sustainability value outcomes may demand a different approach even for companies of the same business sector.
