ABSTRACT

The chapter explores the potentials of a SMU strategy for the revitalization of trade unions in Spain. Spanish trade unions face several mayor challenges, such as a long-lasting economic downturn and restructuring; new civil society movements in the aftermath of the powerful Indignados movement; and new political parties, such as Podemos (We Can). All these challenges contribute to a further loss of traditional trade union power resources and put SMU as a renewal strategy in cooperation with new civil society movements on the agenda. Our chapter aims at analysing the potential of this revitalization strategy in the Spanish context, contrasting the enabling and hindering factors for alliances between trade unions and new social movements.
