ABSTRACT

The project objective of developing only 30 percent of the land was challenging. The rolling hills and resulting valleys with flood plains running down the middle presented even greater restrictions and limitations. The result was to build along the interface between the sloping woodlands and the natural valley floors below. As a consequence, there were three prime development sites that fitted these conditions. A  fourth site was identified at the highest elevation, adjacent to the prime access road. The master plan of Serenbe was made of hamlet-scaled forms positioned around edges of each of the valley bottoms. Furthermore, each hamlet seemed to form a unique sense of place with its particular omega center, individualized set of amenities, and nonresidential functions.
