ABSTRACT

A number of aspects of Self Managed Learning designs emphasize this stance. The Strategic Learning Contract is overtly about a person taking a strategic, big-picture approach to their learning. Also the fact that learning groups exist over time encourages a strategic perspective as opposed to a quick fix mind-set. Many organizations claim to do Self Managed Learning yet all they do is leave learners to undertake miscellaneous random activities. This lack of integration can cause confusion for learners and whilst there can be some value in it, the approach tends to be low on cost-effectiveness. The latter is often about sloppy self development or mechanistic pre-packaged learning materials or re-badged 'participative' training courses. In other cases 'sml' is an excuse for organizational abdication. The programme may go horribly wrong – and the idea of SML gets a bad name. Hence the organization is permanently put off SML as an approach.
