ABSTRACT

Self Managed Learning is an umbrella approach under which other training and development activity can be accommodated. SML can be used for the development of any staff at any level in organization. Self Managed Learning has been applied to, and rigorously evaluated for, a range of programmes and contexts. Cable & Wireless used SML to foster development in variety of regions of the world including Europe, North America and the Middle East. It found that approach was especially valued by technical staff, secretaries and administrators as well as by managers. PPP healthcare similarly found that having launched Self Managed Learning with senior managers, its front line customer service staff valued having same opportunities for development. In practical world of managing in organizations, where the effectiveness of managers is seen in terms of their ability successfully to overcome problems, the learning managed by teachers or trainers is seen to be driven by solutions offered by their specialist or subject expertise.
