ABSTRACT

Serving as both an acknowledgement of Hans Mol’s ministerial and theological work in the Reformed tradition as well as an earnest analysis of yet another setting in which religion acts as the nexus of complex social encounters, this chapter seeks to examine the concept of ‘contextual theology’ or, more precisely, ‘contextual theologies’ in relation to the traditions of western Trinitarian belief. This is accomplished in three ways. First, we look at the theological issues and questions surrounding the concept of contextual theologies. Second, a detailed description and analysis of a series of original and interrelated contextual theologies from one area of Indonesia is provided. Third, we evaluate the ways in which these contextual theologies relate primarily to the western tradition of Trinitarian theology.
