ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the ways in which young people in North Denmark consider and make educational choices in response to changes triggered by global processes. In Denmark, as in many Western countries, global processes are having a strong impact on social, economic and cultural levels. It has often been concluded that global processes have had a huge impact on local communities and local lives. Young people are among those most affected by global processes, all in all adding new layers of complexity to the transition to adulthood. With the quote from Buonfino in mind, one might add that perhaps young people situated in peripheral areas are particularly confronted with the changes brought on by global shifts. As is evident from above, contemporary research suggests that global processes affect young people, but also that young men and young women are affected differently.
