ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about transnational migrants and their processes of taking root when they are in a new place and a new neighborhood. It presents the multilevel intersectional approach in relation to life story narratives. The chapter explains the background of the study: the context of Aalborg East, the empirical data and some of the main perspectives. It analyzes the ambivalent feelings of belonging among the migrants based on an intersectional analysis of the migrant's 'new' social identities. This part of the analysis goes into depth with the migrant's constructions of ethnicized and gendered class relations in everyday life framed by spatial power. The population is quite young compared to the rest of Aalborg; the proportion of immigrants and descendants of immigrants is 18 percent, which makes Aalborg East the most multicultural area in Aalborg. The social distinctions play a large role in the social interactions in everyday life in Aalborg East.
