ABSTRACT

It may seem strange, but in a volume about gambling Johan Huizinga, the author of one of the groundbreaking books on play, Homo ludens, is the odd man out. Homo ludens hardly says a word about gambling. The notion of hazard was, as Roger Caillois pointed out in Les jeux et les hommes, completely omitted in Huizinga's definition of play. 1
