ABSTRACT
The exclusive geographical placement of industrial machinery-what I henceforth refer to as “the machine”—was singularly important in securing and stabilizing the white working class male subject as an exceptionally productive one. Such spatial anchoring allowed the machine’s profoundly superior technological abilities to be singularly claimed by, associated with, mapped onto, and incorporated into, the body of industrial man and nation. In so doing, both were categorically rendered phallic (exceptional) agents of progress and history.
