ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapter of this book. The book underscore the securitization of all types of mobility in space, alluding to what Didier Bigo has describes in his work as 'liberal governmentality'. It answers that question by demonstrating that state and non-state individuals are making of the border at the border line, official border work is being expanded into the interior of states, non-state individuals are creating boundaries to away from the borderline, and produced by both state and non-state actors, often in collaboration with each other. The book does not propose a rigid theoretical framework for understanding the why and where of borders. It examples of borders being constructed and performed in particular ways by state and non-state actors juxtaposed with contestation of the border, the Tohono O'odham intersecting at 'The Gate' or the mother talking to her son across waters of the Tisza River in the Documentary 'The Bridge'.
