ABSTRACT

Studying pilgrimage in religiously mixed regions of the Balkans, and more specifically in Bulgaria, helps to reveal how the culture models help in peacemaking through communication between followers of the two religions especially in times of economical and ideological crisis. Taking into account the influence of the media and the internet on pilgrimage flows, web research and media monitoring have been done on a regular basis. The groups observed during their pilgrimage are affiliated to: Eastern Orthodox Christianity; Sunni Islam; Heterodox Islam; non-practising Christians and Muslims. The monastery of St George, near Hadjidimovo is one of the most popular regional pilgrimage centres. A very similar legend was registered in the opposite part of Bulgaria St George's monastery in Pomorie. St Marina monastery, Karanvarbovka is a nation-wide known pilgrimage centre. Krastova Gora in southern Bulgaria is the most popular Christian Orthodox pilgrimage centre in post-communist Bulgaria, reaching national importance within less than a decade.
