ABSTRACT

The London School of Economics (LSE) and Political Science has around 9,000 students; of these, just over half are postgraduates. LSE actively focuses on continuously developing and enhancing the research environment for this cosmopolitan student body. This chapter focuses to build long-term effective relationships that will develop as their research progresses. The research postcards were designed with two purposes in mind. Firstly, they are a way for academic support librarians to introduce themselves to new students. Secondly, the postcards ask PhD students to give brief details including their name, email address and academic department. The amount of time required for academic support librarians to complete the feedback for students has been monitored and has proven to be very cost efficient especially when assessed alongside other services we offer. The success of the research postcards was evaluated in a number of ways including a survey of PhD students who submitted a postcard in the first year.
