ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates how the Brøset project has succeeded in providing important lessons to be learned for a sustainable urban development with low greenhouse gas emissions with respect to the urban fabric, efficiency of land use and infrastructure. It shows that the Brøset project has largely favoured an ecocentric discourse that places great emphasis on an individual's choice of values rather than the eco-technical discourse. The goal is to create a district that is carbon neutral and a living environment that is good and attractive to live in. The French philosopher Michel Foucault relied on this thinking for his development of the concept of discourse. The municipal plan's strategies for urban development fall largely in line with the guidelines in the White Paper 'Improving the environment in cities and towns'. The Brøset project's strong emphasis on lifestyle changes and the expectation that future residents will make sound environmental choices, points towards the more liberal ecocentric discourse.
