ABSTRACT

This chapter contributes to an understanding of the burden of pedestrian road traffic injuries on post-crash response or care by focusing on the hospital phase for injured pedestrians. It examines demographic characteristics, types of injuries and length of hospital stay of pedestrians who were admitted to Kenyatta National Hospital, a referral hospital in Nairobi. Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) is the largest hospital in the city of Nairobi. Information on characteristics of pedestrians injured in road traffic crashes was obtained from road trauma casualties admitted to Kenyatta National Hospital. Descriptive statistics were generated for demographic characteristics, duration of admission and nature of injury. Overall, demographic characteristics of pedestrians admitted to a hospital, types of injuries sustained and mean length of hospital stay help us understand the burden on hospital and family resources brought about by road traffic crashes. As a result of a crash, pedestrians suffer different types of injuries, and require post-crash care and rehabilitation.
