ABSTRACT
Colombia can be distinguished from other Latin American countries in many ways. One factor differentiating it from others is that Colombia has been ruled mostly by civilian governments that have come to power through electoral processes, while other countries in the region have suffered long periods of military rule. Colombia also has a long tradition of subordination of the armed forces to civilian authority, represented throughout most of its history by leaders of the liberal and conservative parties.
