ABSTRACT

The Harris is a municipal museum and art gallery, which opened to the public in 1893. The intentions concerning collections and audiences can be seen from the very origins of Harris Museum and Art Gallery. The Collections Development Policy outlines potential areas for collecting for all disciplines within the Harris, including looking for opportunities to fill gaps in the historic collections. During the research period for the Collecting New Media Policy, the exhibitions program continued with Passages, the first British solo show by pioneering French video artist Robert Cahen. The brief was to select up to six artworks that fulfilled the selection criteria and that represented a broad range of art forms within the field of digital art. Conversations ensued with the City Council Data Protection Officer and Legal Services, resulting in carefully worded signage to warn the public that their image may be re-appropriated.
