ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses Western European Sufism through the lens of pilgrimage. We will notice that although the cult of saints is quite widespread, other forms of Sufism, such ritual practices, seem secondary to Western European Sufism. The main reason to undertake a pilgrimage is to meet the living charismatic Sufi master. Pilgrimage can be an instrument of interfaith and intra-faith dialogue and a manifestation of the social and political roles played by the Sufi orders. Finally, the author will describe the universalistic, but Islamic, spirit of some Sufi orders which encouraged Sufi disciples to perform Christian pilgrimages.
