ABSTRACT

In the work of the ethnomusicologist, the use of audio recordings, photographs and film are a constant presence; thanks to technological developments, there is also a growing use of multimedia attachments for written reports and analyses. Parallel to this, an awareness of how these methods influence the operative process of research is also growing. Methods of ethnographic research have expanded, addressing issues such as the recognition of the limits of the written discourse in research and communication of the experience in the field, the evaluation of the sensorial aspects, or the centrality of the researcher’s body. The use of audiovisual methods and their various combinations offers a wealth of sensory experience, connecting the recipient more closely to the idea of real participation in the event and inspiring greater involvement on an emotional level; this also promotes the search for new narrative forms, in which the audiovisual is not simply integrated into a written text.
