ABSTRACT

The See What I'm Saying' research project, supported by the Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning through Design (CETLD) at the University of Brighton, examined the introduction of digital media into the academic practice of visual research. The aim of the project was to enable students to develop, through a managed learning and teaching environment, a fresh way of examining objects, both inside and outside the museum, visually and through language. The project was delivered in a familiar face-to-face session where students worked in pairs and participated through presentation, discussion and analysis. The project required considerable technical support, staff training and facilities. Students' films were projected onto a large screen in a university lecture theatre. This helped students to understand the difference between online and cinema viewing. The space was adaptable enough to run seminar sessions and lectures. Students had access to a well-equipped computer suite, which offered network security and an online private space of the Community site.
