ABSTRACT

Human Factors (HF) are risks that exist within any environment that has a human operator. The effective management of HF risks requires identification, analysis, mitigation and review. The management of HF therefore requires the implementation of these four steps within the organization’s operations. Airservices Australia uses an integrated approach to manage HF risks. The first component involves providing HF awareness through education and training. This ensures that employees have sufficient HF knowledge to recognize when HF may impact on operations and react accordingly. The second component is a change management system that incorporates HF assessments. The third component relates to the identification of HF risks during incident investigation, while the final component in the Airservices Australia integrated HF approach is the use of surveillance activities to monitor HF impacts on the system as a whole. The on-going implementation of this integrated approach to manage HF risks will be described in further detail.
