ABSTRACT

The Explanatory Qualitative-Quantitative Method consists of a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. The purpose of this method is to explain by documenting any causal relationships between the urban structural situation of residential areas and the inhabitants' travel behaviour. In order to uncover how and why urban structural conditions influence the inhabitants' travel, qualitative research methods are necessary. One of the main aims of this research is to assess the relationship between real travel behaviour and potential travel behaviour. This project explores the gap between the research on how urban structure constrains certain travel choices and on how urban structure influences travel behaviour. This chapter provides an overview of the research methods used in the empirical collection of data in the Greater Copenhagen and the Greater Oporto case. The Greater Oporto study included a large travel survey among inhabitants of the 11 selected residential areas, very similar to the one used in Copenhagen.
