ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the purpose of an Ecological Footprint. The Ecological Footprint is measured using a standardized area unit equivalent to a world average productive hectare or "global hectare" and is usually expressed in global hectares per person. The chapter notes the adoption of the Ecological Footprint as a sustainability indicator by the National Assembly for Wales and the promotion of the Footprint within Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. Adoption of the Footprint as an indicator is a considerable source of pride to the Assembly and distinguishes it as a leader on sustainability. Within Cardiff Council there has been a strong determination from the outset that the Footprint results should have validity and resonance for policy makers. The chapter outlines the nature of development in Cardiff's International Sports Village (ISV) the key development within the city. The ISV is to be 'a key development in the context of Cardiff as a European Capital celebrating its centenary as a city'.
