ABSTRACT

Liberalization of air transportation in Europe during the period 1992–1997 relaxed pre-existing constraints on where airlines could fly and at what prices. In the late 1990s a dramatic growth in air travel occurred in Europe, in response to the implementation of the ‘third package’ of liberalization measures and the emergence and growth of what have become known as ‘low-cost carriers’ (LCCs).
