ABSTRACT

In Law, dictionaries play an important role and serve as tools that help jurists understand the meaning of words they use or read in legal texts. Although these lexicographical works enjoy no formal legal status, they are often referred to as authorities, particularly when judges and lawyers assess the scope and meaning of statutes. As a consequence, they can constitute both a source of information on the meaning of words or expressions, and a basis for legal arguments. Their double function in law and their frequent use make them an object of interest for legal scholars and practitioners.
