ABSTRACT

In the summer of 2010, following two lengthy trials on indictment, a defendant named Michael Lyons (also known as ‘Dr Mohan Singh’) was convicted by a north London jury of one offence of rape and one offence of sexual assault by penetration. At his first trial in 2009 the jury was unable to reach any verdicts and a retrial was ordered. At his retrial in 2010 the second jury acquitted Lyons of some similar sexual offences and was again unable to reach verdicts in relation to others. For the two offences of which he was ultimately convicted Lyons was sentenced to a substantial term of imprisonment.
