ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study that considers a business to manufacture traditional Scottish sweets. The leadership of incremental change that acknowledges both the importance of tradition and the importance of a fresh strategic direction for the business is not simple, but it is vital to the future success of businesses in rapidly changing markets. The network mapping is included to support the idea that within a small organization with a number of long-standing family members and employees, there are numerous network ties that will influence the role of the leader and the manner in which influence — formal and informal — is generated. A family business often contains a leader-follower dynamic that sits in parallel to the formal power structures, and this case is no exception. While much of the formal power lies within the owner ship structure, a next-generation leader is emerging for both the workforce and the business dimension of the family.
