ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study of a young Estonian female leader, Ms. Mirtel Piko, who has been able to build up a successful career in a big international corporation. Leadership is said to be one of the most observed and least understood phenomenon on Earth, having presented a major challenge to researchers and generating as many definitions as there are authors who have covered the subject. Cultural diversity and considering different cultural backgrounds and characteristics are issues Ms. Piko faces every day. Failure and making mistakes, especially in change management, is also known to Ms. Piko, but she has taken these as learning experiences that have encouraged her to make changes in her mind-set, activities, and behavior. Ms. Piko also wants to encourage other young potential leaders to take the lead and welcome the challenges of high positions within multicultural organizations. She also emphasizes the importance of considering differences in values and cultural understandings.
