ABSTRACT

The island of Bornholm is located in the Baltic Sea. It constitutes the easternmost part of the Danish kingdom and is located 135 km from Denmark and only 37 km from Sweden (see Figure 16.1). With its 587 km², it is a relatively small island with a population of 40,500 in 2013 (Bornholms Kommune, 2013a). The Bornholm economy is based on a few main sectors: agriculture, tourism, fisheries and the transport industry. This territorial structure is typical of remote regions, often characterised by low population growth and also vulnerable to change. This in the past has given rise to problems for the island, and it is likely to continue to do so in the future. It is forecast that the population will continue to decrease, and in 2025 it is expected be as low as 37,450 persons, a decrease of 8% a year (Bornholms Kommune, 2013a).
