ABSTRACT

This chapter considers trolling and online Islamophobia, and provides an overview of the impact of online victimisation and, more specifically, anti-Muslim abuse. When exploring the incidence of online Islamophobia, they recorded 599 cases of reported online abuse that occurred between 1 May 2013 and 28 February 2014, with an increase of nearly four times more online and offline reports in the week following the murder of Lee Rigby. The chapter highlights the impact of online victimisation and, more specifically, online Islamophobia. Islamophobia and Islamophobia-related incidents are not a new phenomenon, but have taken a variety of forms at different times, whilst fulfilling multiple functions. In the United Kingdom (UK), any offences committed as a result of Islamophobia can be regarded as hate crime. Hate comments found on the internet can impact negatively on the victims and their families, and can be both upsetting and frightening.
